The
Pilates Plus Wellness Center officially opened its doors on January
18, 2006. Susan and Dan Spangler, owners and long-time Upper Marlboro
resident is thrilled with the opportunity to offer Pilates in this
growing community. Pilates, (pronounced PUL-AY-TEEZ), is the fastest
growing trend in the health arena. Ms. Spangler recognized a need
for offering alternative health and wellness options in the Upper
Marlboro area and has received a tremendous response to opening
the Center. Not only is Pilates growing in this community, but also
there is a nationwide burgeoning of consumers who are becoming more
aware of the benefits of Pilates. These include stress reduction,
improved flexibility, increased breathing capacity, and strengthening
of the core musculature. Recently, Steve Case, owner of AOL, purchased
one of the largest distributors of Pilate's products and videos,
GAIAM, Incorporated. Cases' investment is based on the prediction
that the new-age lifestyle consumers have gone mainstream and more
and more of the forty-something crowd are becoming aware of the
need to incorporate mind-body practices into their lives.
The
Pilates Plus Wellness Center offers traditional Pilates programs
as well as tailored, one-on-one Pilates programs delivered on custom
Pilates equipment. This equipment is highly specialized and is hand-made
in Colorado and shipped here for use in the studio setting. The
center will attract clients who are searching for alternative health
and wellness options as well as referrals from medical professionals
for specialized therapy. In addition to Pilates programs, the center
will also offer professional training and counseling in life issues
such as Stress Management and Time Management. "Our philosophy is
that exercise and fitness programs alone rarely address most client's
needs." We chose the classic Yin-Yang symbol to represent our philosophy
at the Wellness Center, our personal meaning of “balance”
extends beyond the physical balance one can achieve with Pilates
alone. We promote all forms of balance work at the center. A variety
of other classes are offered at the studio including: Yoga, Tai
Chi, Qigong, Boot camp, Yamuna Body Rolling, and Zumba. It is our
belief that true balance is achieved when we are nurturing ourselves,
physically, emotionally, spiritually, and nutritionally.
Our
education programs are designed to help clients with the life and
balance issues that most people are facing today. The studio has
been fortunate enough to attract premier instructors to the Center;
those trained in Canada and New York City with nationally certified
Pilates education centers. We have an extensive network established
with Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, and other health care professionals;
our goal is for our clients to benefit from these networks. The
Center employs massage therapists who offers full body massage,
reflexology, raindrop therapy and Reiki. We are currently offering
nutrition-based education programs led by a certified holistic nutritionist
as well as one-on-one counseling. We've been fortunate enough to
attract a Japanese and Chinese-style trained acupuncturist who completes
our team.
The Pilates Plus Wellness Center is a member of the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA).
